A perfect hair day. Is there such a thing? I know to most it sounds inconceivable and over the past few years I would’ve agreed. After living in some of the craziest climates in the country (the humidity of Houston, dryness in Dallas, the windy weather in Chicago and now the city grime of New York) I’ve come to find this can be very difficult to pull off. I’ll be honest–my hair has taken a backseat these days. I finally got a new cut recently that really cleaned it up but I’ve just been so busy gearing up for the holidays and it’s getting colder so my showers are really hot and my hairdryer has been on full blast.
I decided that it was time for a change! My hair deserves the same kind of love that I try to give to my skin, right? I teamed up with the Living Proof team to find out what products were right for me and how I could achieve my own version of a “perfect hair day”.
If you asked me what my biggest hair challenges are I would say: moisture, volume and heat protection. After taking the quiz on the site I was quickly able to figure out which products I needed to try to tailor to my little head. My hair is pretty dry, straight, and definitely sees it fair share of heat. I love quickly curling my hair and although I haven’t picked up a straightener in years, I do blow dry my hair more than usual in the winter instead of letting it air dry. All of those factors and my answers led me to my result for shampoo & conditioner: the Restore line.
After 3 weeks of testing out a new routine I can honestly say I’ve seen a massive difference in the health of my hair. I have been so excited about the results and thought I would share my new steps to my perfect hair day:
-
Use a shampoo + conditioner that fits your hair type
You’ve heard it before but you don’t need to wash your hair every. By choosing something that actually tailors to your hair needs your washes will be more effective and your conditioner will extend your washes even longer. I can go day 2 and sometimes even day 3 without my hair looking unhealthy or dirty.
-
Protect It
I put moisturizer on my face every single day and night because healthy skin is really important to me (and I hate the feeling of a dry crackly face). I wash and then put on moisturizer. The same goes for my hair now. I started using the Restore Instant Protection quickly on damp hair before blow drying and a little bit of the 5-in-1 styling treatment. They both serve to help prevent breakage, heat damage and also give me a little bit of styling help if I don’t do anything else to style it.
-
Deep Condition
Just like anything in life, a little love goes a long way. I have never used a mask treatment on my hair before but after being inspired by my friend Mary who has gorgeous hair year-round and swears by them, I decided this was the year to give it a shot. Once or twice a week just spend an extra 5 minutes in the shower and let your hair absorb the mask like a huge glass of water after a long night out. The next day you’ll be shocked at how healthy and shiny your hair instantly looks.
-
Volumize (add a little oopmh)
My hair tends to lack in the volume department (nothing about living in Texas rubbed off on me here). I’ve tried using a volumizer before and honestly just can’t figure out how to make it work the way my hairstylist does. If I’m curling my hair for a night out, I add a little instant texture mist to my ‘do when it’s mostly set and it gives it a little more of a messy, volumized look.

Make It Last
As much as I love a good night of pampering, it’s unrealistic to be able to deep condition and add product to my hair every day of the week. I actually love my “2nd day hair†(I can never curl it the way I like it on the first day) and have thus developed a dry shampoo addiction. I’ve tried everything from Oribe, Aveda, Arrojo’s in house product, Tresemme, and more. So far I’m loving the Living Proof version because not only does it work and smell divine it actually cleans your hair –total magic for someone with a busy New York lifestyle.
If you’re looking to refresh your hair routine or just add a little something to it, I’ve listed the products I’ve been using below and a few of the other top rated by Living Proof. I’m back in New York for a quick 3 weeks before Christmas and cannot wait for all of the fun events and holiday décor around the city! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are as excited about December as I am!
